Russell Hartup

Comedian, writer, engineer. Sometimes draws things

ABOUT

Russell never knew he was going to be a stand-up comedian. In 2011 his wife signed him up for his first gig without telling him. The rest, as they say, are clichés…

His face

Adelaide Fringe 2018 saw Russell make his debut solo hour with “A Light and a Whistle”, which cemented him in the Adelaide scene. His follow up 2019 show, “Age of Wonder” received a 4 star review by Channel 44, saying “you will leave filled with joy”.

In 2020 Russell was part of the showcase line up, Adelaide Comedy Next Gen, and riding the wave of post pandemic optimism* performed a sold out season in 2021 as part of “The Rule of 3”.

As part of a double act, Russell wrote and performed the comedy half of “Caught in the cross-wire” at the Adelaide Fringe in 2016, which was heralded by Glam Adelaide as one of the “Five Funny Fringe Shows You Must See In 2016”.

Russell has performed stand-up comedy around Australia and overseas, and has shared the stage with some of the best stand-up comedians in the country and around the world. Acts such as Justin Hamilton, Nick Cody, Claire Hooper, Ivan Aristeguiteta, Norman Lovett, Georgie Carroll, Demi Lardner, Amos Gill, Chris Franklin, Damian Callinan, James McCann, and a host of others.

Russell works as an engineer during the day and often struggles with the Jekyll and Hyde nature of his life. He was once heckled by his boss at a show and was faced with an ethical conundrum, ‘Do I squash him like a bug or have a solid performance review in two weeks?’
